I often receive many questions asking about the proper way of introducing a new kitty to the household. While, it may take a bit of planning to do things the correct way and it may take a bit of patience on your part, but it will be worth it!

1)   Go slow and be patient! This is often the hardest for us humans to do! A cat will often take 7 to 10 days to transition to a new home. There are new smells and noises, which can be quite scary to your new kitty. So, what’s a person to do?

 2)   Have an isolated area for the cat. A quiet room is a great choice. Have the room set up with a new litter box, a water bowl and a few toys. Make sure you have a bed for the kitty…sometimes a box with towels will make a great bed. Cat love to lay in boxes and they often feel more secure. Keep kitty confined to this room.

3)   Give your new cat an hour or so to explore the room on his own. After an hour or so, bring in some food for kitty. At this point your kitty may or may not eat. Don’t be alarmed if he doesn’t start eating the moment you put his food down! It may still take him some time to adjust and he may not even eat that first day.

4)   Don’t everyone descend on the new kitty all at once! If you have children, bring them in the kitty’s room one at a time, allowing them to meet the newest member of your household.

5)   Your new kitty may be timid and shy. Speak softly to your new kitty. Get on his level and sit on the floor with him. It is much less intimidating to a cat when you get down to his level. Let kitty come to you. Offer an outstretched hand for kitty to sniff.

With time and patience your kitty will adjust to your household and will become a full-fledged member of your family!
